Chapter 9

They planned their wedding for the week after the Bingleys’ return. On the first days of October, all the party left Longbourn and Netherfield for London. Elizabeth travelled with the Darcys and Mary, accompanied by Mrs Annesley, Georgiana’s companion, a lovely lady who made friends with her mother and aunt.

The Bennets were to stay at the Bingleys, while Mary was invited to stay with Georgiana—both sisters highly excited; Elizabeth promised to take them on their honeymoon trip.

“What do you want to do during our honeymoon?” Mr Darcy asked as their wedding day approached.

“Let us first get married and then decide.”

He accepted this answer as he did with all her demands, whether loudly spoken or just implied.

Once they arrived in London, they were apart for the first time in weeks. Knowing he was in Netherfield, which she could visit at any time, was more important than she cared to admit, while London was a vast and unknown city in which it seemed that she had lost him even if they stayed a few streets away. That first evening, when they arrived, they did not meet for dinner, and that night, she had a complicated dream of Mr Darcy leaving her. To her surprise, it was her worst night dream.

Finally, it was time to accept that her wedding would take place in a few days, which would happen with her complete acceptance. Despite many opportunities, she had not broken the engagement—not because of her parents but because she wanted to be a wife. Not yet his wife, but to be married and finally step into that world of intimacy. She wanted to know everything about the secret things that happened between a man and a woman. In the end, she wanted to become a woman. Was love important? She did not know anymore as her body responded to Mr Darcy’s and yearned for him above all. And the last night’s bad dream had nothing to do with reality.

The following day, she saw a stranger in the mirror—same eyes and face, same body and gown she knew, yet that person trembled in anticipation. Once she was in his carriage on their way to breakfast at Darcy House, she made peace with the past and the present. Perhaps it was not the bliss she had expected. Still, all the talks at Longbourn about marriage and womanhood were only the reflection of an imaginary world created by some very naïve girls. This was life: London, a comfortable carriage, and Mr Darcy beside her forever.

On the way to London, she imagined her future home, but the reality was beyond her vivid imagination. The white, three-story house looked more like a palace than a family home. He greeted them in the vast hall, and she could see the curious glances the maids and footmen stole in her direction while they waited to be introduced to her.

“Miss Bennet is my fiancé,” he said with a smile, and everybody bowed and curtsied. They smiled with hope on their faces, and she smiled back, trying not to show how impressed she was by the house and her reception.
